Latin occupies a special place for Languages Today. This so-called dead language forms the basis of some of the most commonly-spoken languages in the world - and is used every day by (probably) every single English speaker. On these pages we are proud to offer a range of services for people needing help with Latin. Latin has a rich cultural heritage that spans two and a half millennia. Along the way it has formed the basis of some of today's most widely-spoken languages (eg English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese) and it has played a hugely influential role in the development of many others (eg Dutch, German, Russian, Gaelic etc). And we are not just talking about the words used in these languages, but the actual structure and grammar of these languages. Because of this - and contrary to popular belief - Latin is far from dead and buried, but actually alive and well - and growing in popularity! It's still regarded as an official language in the Vatican. Through Latin, people are learning all about where their own language comes from and how it is put together. Suddenly, every day words can spring to life and take on new meaning.
This passion for Latin has inspired us to create a section on the
Languages Today website devoted just to Latin. You can use the links
on the left to access a range of learning and translation resources.
Enjoy! |
